Major Winter Storm to Slam U.S. With Ice, Heavy Snow and Dangerous Arctic Cold

Nationwide: A powerful and far-reaching winter storm is expected to sweep across much of the United States beginning Friday, bringing a dangerous combination of heavy snow, ice, and life-threatening cold to millions from the Southern Plains to the Northeast, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters say the sprawling storm system will stretch more than 2,000 miles, impacting major population centers from Texas and Oklahoma to New York City and New England. As of Thursday, more than 130 million people were under winter weather alerts for snow, sleet, freezing rain, and extreme cold. Ice and Sleet Threat in the South The most severe impacts are expected across portions of the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley, where widespread freezing rain and sleet could lead to dangerous travel conditions and prolonged power outages. Meteorologists warn that significant ice accumulation may down power lines, damage trees, and make many roads impassable. States including Texas, Arkansas, Georgia, and North Carolina have issued emergency declarations ahead of the storm, activating National Guard units, emergency response crews, and warming centers. Officials are urging residents to complete preparations and avoid unnecessary travel once the storm arrives. Heavy Snow and Snow Squalls in the North and East Farther north, the storm will bring periods of heavy snow from the Southern Rockies and Plains into the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast through the weekend. Snow squalls, capable of rapidly reducing visibility to near zero, are expected in parts of upstate New York and New England, posing a serious risk to drivers. Lake-effect snow will continue downwind of the Great Lakes, while additional bands of snow move east as the storm strengthens. Arctic Cold Raises Life-Threatening Risks Behind the storm, an intense surge of Arctic air will plunge temperatures well below normal across large portions of the country. Wind chills may drop to 40 to 50 degrees below zero in the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest, with sub-zero wind chills extending deep into the central and eastern U.S. Forecasters warn that exposure to these conditions could result in frostbite within minutes and increase the risk of hypothermia, especially if power outages occur. Officials are urging residents to check on vulnerable neighbors, protect pets and livestock, and limit time outdoors. Travel Disruptions Likely Nationwide Airlines have issued travel advisories and flexible rebooking policies as airports across the South, Midwest, and Northeast brace for weather-related delays and cancellations. Transportation officials are also warning that icy roads and reduced visibility could make travel extremely hazardous through the weekend. What Comes Next The storm is expected to continue eastward into early next week, with lingering ice in parts of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic and heavy snow continuing across portions of New England. Forecasters emphasize that exact snowfall and ice totals may shift as the system evolves. Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts, follow guidance from emergency officials, and prepare for potential disruptions to power, travel, and daily routines.
