WATERBORO, Maine — Chaos erupted just after 2:00 P.M. today when the Waterboro branch of Gorham Savings Bank was robbed at gunpoint. Authorities say the suspect — described as a man wearing a tan T-shirt — fled the scene and remains at large. Police have requested a helicopter to aid in the search.
The amount stolen has not yet been released. Residents in the Waterboro and Hollis areas are urged to stay alert and report anything suspicious. Updates are continuing to come in as the investigation unfolds.
Update: 3:00 P.M.
Early witness reports suggested two suspects may have escaped on dirt bikes. Police located tracks and a last-known direction of travel with help from roofers who spotted the bikes near George Connors Road in Hollis.
An active search is underway around the Plains Road area.
Update: 5:00 P.M.
Police have now confirmed that only one suspect robbed the Gorham Savings Bank on Sokokis Trail. Several employees and one customer were inside at the time, but no injuries were reported.
Officials will not say whether the dirt bikes spotted earlier are connected to the suspect. A photo of the suspect is expected to be released soon.
The bank announced that its Waterboro branch will remain closed for the rest of the day and declined further comment.
Update: 6:00 P.M.
York County Sheriff William King confirmed the robbery occurred just before 2:00 P.M. A man armed with a gun entered the bank, stole money, and fled.
The FBI has been called in to assist in identifying the suspect.
A representative for Gorham Savings Bank said employees were not physically harmed but were understandably shaken. The Waterboro branch will remain closed until further notice while law enforcement continues its investigation.
The bank’s Video Teller services will remain available during normal hours. Customers are encouraged to check the bank’s website for updates:
